The first describes work done for and early results from an investigation into the possibility of upgrading capability in the distillation used to recover two solvent streams from a challenging mixed solvent separation and recovery duty associated with a current commercial process, while studying the opportunity of substituting green, bio-based solvent alternatives for conventional solvents in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). Already a number of filtration methods for impurity removal have been investigated including naturally derived materials (chitosan). Alternative solvent demonstrations for bio-renewable acetone and 2-Me-THF are also reported.

The second poster explains how Twin Screw Extrusion is being investigated as a key enabling technology for greener pharmaceuticals production. The attractions of the technology as a unit operation include small equipment footprint, process flexibility, solvent-free continuous manufacturing and suitability for real-time monitoring. The case study deals more specifically with the feasibility assessment of producing a medicinal product using Twin Screw Granulation (TSG) to produce a granulate for an immediate-release tablet with the aim of evaluating the reduction in the environmental impact in terms of energy efficiency and resource use relative to the current batch manufacturing process. A suitable prototype has been developed at R&D scale making product with appropriate quality attributes, and energy consumption is decreased by reducing the number of process steps and due to the small equipment footprint, which allows for smaller (environmentally controlled) production facilities. This example is now in the process of scale-up with the support of other partners in ETERNAL.

LIFE-GREENAPI is a 3-year initiative coordinated by Angelini Pharma aimed at proposing a technological shift in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) production to promote sustainability in the European Pharmaceutical Sector. The project runs until May 2026. You can find out more about and watch video highlights of the LIFE-GREENAPI dissemination event here.
